How to Cook Stir Fry Chicken

Stir frying cooks bite size chicken pieces over a high heat with minimal oil. Stir frying is a fast and easy way to cook chicken and, when cooked correctly, the chicken should turn out juicy and tender.

Preparing the Chicken

First of all, you need to place raw boneless, skinless chicken pieces on a cutting board. Slice the chicken across the grain into ¼ inch strips with a large, sharp knife. Heat a wok or skillet over a high heat. Test its heat by adding a drop of water to the pan. If the water sizzles, the pan is hot enough to fry with if not wait till it heats up some more.

The Best Chicken Stir Frying Technique

Add a couple of tablespoons of oil to the wok and swirl it around to coat all the sides. Heat it for half a minute and then add the chicken to the wok. Briskly stir and toss the chicken with a wooden spoon or a wok utensil, keeping it in constant motion.

How Long Until it is Done?

You will need to cook the chicken for between three and five minutes in this way. When the chicken is no longer pink in the middle, it is ready. Remove the chicken from the pan and continue with your recipe.

What About Using Whole Chicken Breasts?

If you are using larger pieces of chicken, you will need to sauté rather than stir fry. This is a similar technique but large chicken pieces will take longer to cook, you cook them on a lower heat than with stir frying and you don't need to keep them in constant motion like with smaller pieces.

How to Make Chicken Salad

There are many different chicken salad recipes to choose from and chicken makes a wonderful salad addition. It provides a nice flavor, a good texture, and a source of protein. You can either use pre-cooked chicken for your chicken salad or stir fry a couple of chicken breast yourself. When the chicken is no longer pink inside, it is done.

Other Chicken Salad Ingredients

Now you have your cooked chicken ready, what else are you going to use in your salad? As a base you might like to tear some lettuce leaves into bite sized pieces. They key to a good salad is to make sure everything is bite sized. This makes it easier to eat.

You might want to get the rest of your salad ready before you start cooking the chicken if you want to have the chicken warm. A chilled salad with warm chicken on top is really tasty.

You can add some herbs such as fresh basil or fresh coriander to the lettuce and toss it all together. Other good ingredients for a chicken salad include sliced, boiled egg, tomatoes (either sliced or cherry tomatoes), sliced onion, grated carrot, celery, and fried, crumbled bacon.

You might also like to add some grated cheese since chicken and cheese are great together. Use salt and pepper to season your salad.

Chicken Salad Dressing

The dressing should be added when the salad is served. If you add it earlier, the salad will go soggy. You can use mayonnaise, a combination of extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar, lemon juice or any other type of salad dressing you like.

How to Dehydrate Chicken Safely

Food drying, or food dehydration, has been used for centuries and can be used for many different foods including chicken. Dehydration means the water is removed from the food, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and microorganisms. Removing water from food is a cheap and easy method of food preservation. Dehydrated foods are space efficient and keep for a long time.

How Does Food Dehydration Work?

If you want to know how to dehydrate chicken, you will need a dehydrating machine. This works by drying and circulating the air and absorbing the water from the food you have placed in it. The air temperature is low enough to dry the food without cooking it.

Home-dried food tastes better than commercially dried foods because you do not add the preservatives and additives when dehydrating food at home that a commercial dehydration company would use.

To dehydrate chicken, you would need to set your dehydrator temperature between 160 and 175 degrees F. Vegetables, fruit and herbs need a lower temperature. Chicken has to be cooked through before dehydrating because raw poultry can carry salmonella. Cut the cooked chicken into tiny pieces because larger pieces are more difficult to rehydrate later. Ground chicken is good for dehydrating.

How Long Does it Take?

When the chicken is leathery, hard, sticky, and moist, it is ready. Dried chicken feels softer when warm so turn off the dehydrator and let the chicken cool down. The exact drying time depends on the size of the chicken pieces, the air temperature outside the dehydrator, the type of dehydrator you are using and the amount of air circulation where the chicken is dried, but allow five hours for the chicken to be completely dehydrated. If you are using larger chicken pieces, it might take up to ten hours.

How to Store Dehydrated Chicken

The enemy of dried foods is moisture. Dried foods exposed to the air absorb moisture and become limp. Dehydrated chicken needs to be stored in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. Another good way to keep dehydrated chicken is to store it in food vacuum bags. You can get vacuum sealers online and from kitchenware, stores and these are the perfect complement to food dehydrators.

If you are going to keep the dried chicken for longer than a month, it is probably a good idea to store it in the refrigerator or freezer. A lot of people recommend storing dehydrated chicken in the refrigerator as soon as it is dehydrated to retard any bacterial growth.

In addition, if you think you have accidentally stopped the dehydration process before the chicken has completely dried out, you should store it in the freezer so the remaining moisture does not cause it to spoil.

How to Rehydrate Chicken

When using your dehydrated chicken in chicken recipes, you should use it as soon as possible after opening the container. You need to add boiling water to the dried chicken to make it into rehydrated chicken again. It will taste slightly different to non-dehydrated chicken because it has had its moisture removed then replaced but using tasty chicken recipe sauces means the chicken will taste fine and be good for use in chicken recipes.

How to Butcher a Chicken and Prepare Chicken Pieces

If you have access to live chickens, you will have wonderfully fresh meat. Butchering chickens is not for the faint of heart but if you want to have a go, here is a step by step guide.

If you want to know how to butcher a chicken, you should choose a healthy looking plump one. Grab it firmly by the sides or around the neck with both hands. Break its neck quickly so it does not suffer. Sling the chicken around by the neck until the bone pops. Chop the head off with an axe.

Hang the chicken up by the legs by tying rope around the legs and securing the rope to a tree branch. Hang the chicken by the legs with its head down, so the blood can drain out properly.

Remove the chicken after ten minutes and pluck out the feathers. Chop off the feet. Remove the intestines and internal organs. Make a torch from newspaper and hold the chicken over the flame. This removes any pinfeathers you have missed. Wash the chicken in soapy water and rinse. Leave the chicken whole for stewing or baking or cut it up for casseroles or fried chicken recipes.

Why Cut Up a Chicken Yourself?

If you want to know how to cut up a whole chicken or how to debone a whole chicken, read on. Cutting up a whole chicken to make chicken parts is quite easy if you know how. Whole chickens are cheaper per pound and pre-cut meat is often poorly trimmed, meaning you get less meat per pound. Cutting up your own chicken makes good financial sense.

How to Cut Up a Chicken

First of all, you need to put the chicken on a cutting board breast side up. Pull one leg away from the body and cut through the skin between the sides of the thigh and the body. Bend the leg away from the body until the thighbone pops from the hip. Cut between the ball and socket to separate the leg. Repeat with the other chicken leg.

Place the chicken leg side down and cut firmly through the joint between the thigh and drumstick. Remove the wing, with the chicken on its back, by cutting over the joint on the inside of the wing. Pull the wing away from the body and cut down through the joint and skin. Do the same with the other wing.

Cut through the cavity from the tail end and slice through the thin part around the shoulder. Cut parallel to the chicken's backbone and slice the bones of the rib cage. Repeat on the other side of the backbone.

Pull the back and breast apart then cut through the shoulder bones to detach the back from the breast. Cut the back in two by cutting across the backbone where the ribs end. You can leave the breast whole or cut it in half. To cut it in half, use a strong pressure and cut down along the breastbone length to split it into two.

What Pieces Do You Get From a Whole Chicken?

When you know how to debone a whole chicken, you will be able to do it in a few minutes. You will get two legs, two thighs, two wings, two breasts, the top of the back and the tail end of the back, to use in whichever chicken recipes you like.

How to Barbeque Chicken like You have Been Doing it Forever

Throwing sausages and hamburgers on the grill until they are browned is one thing but cooking poultry such as chicken needs special attention. If you throw chicken on the grill, cross your fingers and hope for a perfect finish you are likely to be very disappointed!

Nobody wants to serve up burnt offerings or, even worse, undercooked chicken, which could make your barbecue guests sick. Before you ask how long to bake BBQ chicken, it is possible to cook it on the grill and have deliciously tender, moist chicken as a result. Here are some tips on how to barbeque chicken the right way:

  • Get the amounts right. Depending what else is on the menu, plan to serve about ten ounces of chicken to each guest. That is about half a chicken breast, two thighs or two drumsticks per person. Assume they will be eating more than just the chicken.

  • How long do you barbecue chicken? It is impossible to predict it accurately because many factors, such as the heat of the grill, the thickness of the chicken and the marinade or sauce you are using, can affect this. Make sure your barbecue guests have snacks to nibble on while they wait for the main dish. A simple vegetable platter and low fat dip will take the edge of their hunger without ruining their appetite.

  • Do not baste your chicken with the marinade it was sitting in while raw, at least not in the last ten minutes of cooking, unless you want to risk giving your guests salmonella. If you have used a marinade, which is high in sugar, wipe most of it off the meat and do not use it for basting because it will burn.

  • You can add flavor to the boneless chicken breast recipes by using fruit or nut wood on the barbecue. Mesquite, maple, and oak all work nicely.

  • Boneless chicken cooks better when it is evenly thick throughout so trim off any uneven pieces, excess fat, or cartilage before you begin. Save the thinner bits and freeze them for future stews or stir-fries.

  • Cut thin slits crosswise in the boneless breast down the whole length of it if you are using a marinade because it penetrates further this way and it looks good too. Do not cut all the way through.

  • Use a marinade with acidic ingredients like vinegar or lemon juice. You should aim for a two to one oil to acidic ratio. Let the chicken sit in the marinade for several hours. Onions, garlic, mustard, and ginger are all nice marinade ingredients but avoid salt because it dries the chicken out. If you like salty chicken, add salt after it has finished cooking.

  • Set the grill to medium high and grill the chicken until the top starts to become opaque. Flip it over and apply marinade to the top. When both sides of the boneless chicken are brown, press them down to check they are firm. A meat thermometer should read 165 degrees F and the inside of the chicken should be white not pink. You can pierce it with a knife to check.

  • Let the chicken sit for five minutes before serving it, to let the juices distribute evenly throughout the meat.

How to Marinade Chicken for Flavorful, Succulent Results

If you are wondering how to marinade chicken, or more correctly how to marinate chicken since the marinade is the sauce, you are in for a real treat when you try some chicken marinade recipes. Perhaps you have marinated beef before but a lot of people have not yet tried chicken marinades and do not know how to marinade chicken.

There are several reasons for using a chicken marinade. Chicken normally has a superior texture and flavor if you marinate it before cooking. This is especially true for boneless, skinless chicken breasts, which tend to dry out when they are cooked.

Types of Chicken Marinade Recipes

There are many different ingredients you can use if you want to know how to marinade chicken. A flavoring such as herbs, mustard, fruit, salt, and pepper is usually used and an acid such as vinegar, yogurt, wine, tomatoes, and lemon juice will also feature in most chicken marinades.

The acidic ingredients are for tenderizing the chicken and some fruits can work as a tenderizer, including papaya, figs, kiwi, and pineapple.

For a stronger flavor, use less oil in the chicken marinade. The best chicken marinades are made up with half oil and half acid. This combination might not produce a nice salad dressing but it does give a beautifully textured and flavored piece of chicken!

Fresh herbs are very nice in chicken marinades. If you are using dried herbs, you should crush them between your flavors before adding them to the marinade, to release the aromatic oils.

How Long Can You Marinade Chicken

Different chicken marinades call for different marinating times and if you want to know how long can you marinade chicken, the answer is that it depends. You might need anything between fifteen minutes and several hours.

One good rule to follow though is that if the marinating time is going to be more than an hour, marinate the chicken in the refrigerator because keeping it at room temperature encourages bacteria to grow.

You should follow the suggested marinating time in the recipe you are making. It is a bad idea to marinate the chicken for longer than recommended because the chicken can get mushy if the marinating time is too long, as the acid breaks down the flesh.

Step by Step Guide to Chicken Marinades

Once you have your ingredients to hand, you should mix your marinade in a heavy-duty Ziploc food storage bag. Add the chicken to the well-mixed marinade and squish it a bit with your fingers to make sure the chicken is coated. Put the bag in the refrigerator, in a bowl in case it leaks.

When you are ready to cook your marinated chicken, remove it from the marinade and put it on the grill or skillet without rinsing it or wiping the marinade off. How to cook marinade chicken on the grill is as simple as cooking chicken without a marinade.

If the recipe suggests it, you can brush some of the marinade on to the chicken while it is cooking but stop doing this five minutes before the end of the cooking time for food safety reasons.

If you have, marinade left, throw it away or boil it for three minutes in a small pan and then use it as a sauce. Anyone who knows how to marinade chicken will advise you never to serve raw marinade, which has been in contact with raw chicken.
